VIRTUAL LISTENING FORUM ON JUVENILE
JUSTICE REALIGNMENT
On September 24, 2021, the Probation Department hosted a Community Forum to receive
feedback on how to best support youth in secure custody at the JJC. Emerging themes
included the need to develop staff to build positive and supportive relationships with
youth, increase officer awareness of racial disparities and injustices, foster a safe and
uplifting environment, and provide varied and evidence-based programming. Community
input also highlighted the importance of treating family members as partners,
incorporating data and research around of the root causes of crime, and creating a more
effective continuum of care for youth by increasing connections with community groups.
The Probation Department will use the feedback received to inform the design and
programming available for youth, in addition to building stronger partnerships with
community groups and offering increased training to officers and staff.
